Not too high, not too low: the right level changes everything.

College sports in the United States are organized into associations and divisions. Understanding them means aiming at the right level, neither too high nor too low, and finding a program where you will get playing time and a real place on the team.

The main associations

NCAA
NAIA
NJCAA
U SPORTS

NCAA: the best known, in three divisions (Division I, II and III). The highest level and the most media coverage.
NAIA: a separate association, often more flexible on eligibility, with real scholarship opportunities.
NJCAA: junior colleges (two-year programs), a common stepping stone before a four-year university.
U SPORTS: the Canadian equivalent, a recognized English-speaking (sometimes French-speaking) option that is often more accessible.

The NCAA divisions

D3 · academic aid

Since the House v. NCAA settlement took effect on July 1, 2025, Division I works with roster limits (a maximum number of athletes per team) rather than a fixed number of scholarships. Division II uses equivalency (a scholarship budget that can be split into partial awards). Division III awards no athletic scholarships: funding there comes only from academic or need-based aid.
